On 12 May 1984, Mercedes-Benz opened the rebuilt Nürburgring with a one-off Race of Champions: a field of Formula 1 greats — Lauda, Prost, Rosberg and more — all in identical 190E 2.3-16 race cars, so only talent would decide it. The winner? A 24-year-old F1 rookie named Ayrton Senna, who beat every established champion on the grid. It was the first loud signal of the legend to come.
